About Us

The second-cheapest option

Faced with three versions of the same thing, most people pick the middle one. Not the cheapest — that feels like a risk. Not the most expensive — that feels like paying for a name.

It's a reasonable instinct, and in most categories it works. In clothing it often doesn't, because the middle price rarely reflects the middle quality. It reflects the middle marketing budget.

Two garments at the same price can differ by a factor of three in fabric cost. What you can't see is which one spent the money on the cloth and which spent it on the campaign.

What the money actually goes into

Fabric weight and fibre length. The single largest cost in most garments, and the one that determines whether something still looks right after thirty washes. Long-staple cotton pills less and wears slower; short-staple is cheaper and feels almost identical new.

Grading across the size range. Fitting a pattern properly on every size costs money, so most brands fit one sample size and scale outward. Done carelessly, the garment works for some customers and quietly doesn't for everyone else — and that's invisible until it arrives.

Finishing you can't see. Interior seams, seam allowance, how a zip is set, whether the lining is cut generously enough to move. These fail first, and they're the cheapest place to save.

None of that shows in a photograph. All of it shows in the specification.

So we read the specification first

Composition, weight, construction — before we look at the image. It's an unglamorous way to buy stock and it predicts what you'll still be wearing in two years better than anything else does.

Plenty doesn't clear it. That's why the range stays small enough that we can say something specific about every item we sell.

What we don't do

Chase trends. By the time one reaches the shops it's already fading, and buying into it guarantees a wardrobe with an expiry date.

Inflate prices to discount them. The price is the price. It doesn't go up in September so it can come down in November, and there's no "was £89" that was never £89.

Manufacture urgency. No countdown timers, no "only two left" when there are two hundred. If something is genuinely running low, we'll say so once.

Overclaim. A shirt won't change your life. What good clothes do is quieter — you stop noticing them. No adjusting in the mirror, no second-guessing at the door, no thought about whether it suits the room you're walking into.

That's the whole ambition. Not transformation. Just being properly dressed and free to think about something else.

Ask us before you order

Not sure about the size, how a fabric drapes, or whether something washes at home?

Email us. Tell us the size you normally wear and which brand it's from, and we'll tell you honestly which way to go — including when the answer is that a piece runs small.

We'd rather give good advice than process a return.
